Yorgos Ziavras will step in as a substitute conductor for Hansel and Gretel at Wuppertal Opera on Saturday, March 29, 2025, replacing Johannes Witt. This performance marks Ziavras’s debut with Oper Wuppertal, following his acclaimed run of Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Athens last month.

About the Performance

“Crunch, crunch, little crunch, who’s crunching on my little house?”

Two children lost in the forest—a nightmare for any parent. While picking berries, siblings Hansel and Gretel stray too far and find themselves deep in the woods. Though they encounter friendly creatures along the way, they ultimately fall into the clutches of the wicked witch. But Hansel and Gretel are no ordinary children…

A beloved classic returns to Wuppertal Opera! Johannes Weigand’s 2006 production, a favorite among audiences, has achieved cult status. With its “contemporary children’s book aesthetic” (Markus Pysall), the staging is perfect for young audiences—while offering plenty for adults to enjoy as well.
